FORTSCHRITT PRODUCTION WORKSHOP

PUBLISHED NEWSPAPER ARTICLE

The newspaper MAGDEBURGER VOLKSSTIMME published an article about our cooperation with students of the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Science. Here you can read what it was about in detail.

A TRADITIONAL BRAND IS REVIVED

Text by Frederik Schiek

Threshing machines, straw presses and slurry pumps: From the 1960s, the Kombinat Fortschritt Agricultural Machinery was the largest agricultural equipment manufacturer in the GDR. A German-Chinese company wants to redevelop the concepts in cooperation with design students from the University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal.

By now they are back - eight industrial design students, including their professor Thies Krüger, set off for China at the beginning of the winter semester. There they attended the Faculty of Art and Design of Hefei University. The city is located in the east of the country, about 400 kilometers away from Shanghai. The reason for this long journey was the International Design Workshop, which is taking place for the 17th time and involves not only students but also Chinese companies.

Prof. Thies Krüger is an instructor for semantic, ergonomie, form finding and interdisziplinary projects at the institut of Industrial Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Magdeburg.

This year's task was to develop conceptually and creatively innovative public toilets and underwater robots. They were not only looked after by teachers, but also by representatives of local companies. "The students not only learn design there, but also practice international cooperation as it takes place in a globalized world of work," says Prof. Krüger. In doing so, language barriers and cultural differences have to be overcome. The design drafts were presented to more than 200 guests and Chinese television.

That this participation is indeed effective in the media, was shown last year. Thus it turned out that the German-Chinese company CSSC Technical Products from Qingdao, a former German colony, became aware of the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and contacted Thies Krüger. Meanwhile, four students complete an internship in the metalworking company. "We are working on various products such as a general purpose vehicle for street cleaning. In addition to the daily work in the office, we were also able to visit local suppliers such as a powder coater, a foundry and a sand-casting company to learn more about the production possibilities, "says industrial design student Leon Schuller, who has learned so far about the mentality and Culture of Chinese.

The establishment of a development company in the environment of the university is also under discussion. Particularly interesting for the university location in the former "granary of the GDR" is, that the company CSSC produces agricultural machinery of GDR tradition brand "FORTSCHRITT" under license, among other things, and will further develop that with the help of the University of Magdeburg Stendal. The polls are still running. Prof. Krüger is enthusiastic: "I am pleased that the activities of our university in China are being carried out. Especially when it results in concrete sustainable projects. Our students gain valuable practical experience abroad and possibly Chinese companies found companies in Saxony-Anhalt. That's how I imagine a successful foreign activity."
